Around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction reports the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: Current negative trends in biodiversity and ecosystems will undermine progress towards 80% of the assessed targets of the Sustainable Development Goals—including those related to ending hunger and poverty. IFPRI Director General Shenggen Fan reflects on why transforming food systems will be critical to maintain biodiversity for planetary and human health in an IFPRI blog post that first appeared on the Thomson Reuters Foundation News site.

Additional highlights from this week’s Compact2025 News in Brief include:

  • The EU will allocate 5 million euros to finance a four-year program of FAO, IFAD, and WFP to address the root causes of rural gender inequalities.
  • An IFPRI policy brief shows that cash transfers combined with nutritional education can have significant positive impacts on maternal and child nutrition in a conflict setting.
  • On May 17, IFPRI will host a special event presenting the Institute’s new research program on Urban Food Systems for Better Diets, Nutrition, and Health.
